The reason we don't celebrate St. Patrick's Day!

40 years ago, on St. Patrick's Day, I was home cooking corned beef and cabbage, etc. I was 5 months pregnant and had an 20 month old toddler. Bob was at the start of his LAPD career, attending the Los Angeles Police Academy.

Bob didn't come home that night. He almost died, from severe dehydration; while he was running the hills of Elysian Park as part of his training. (That day was much like today, the temp. was in the mid 80's.) Like a good police wife, I didn't try to contact him when he was late; this was way before the days of cell phones. I just waited and waited; and the dinner was ruined.

I finally got a call that he was hospitalized. I found a neighbor to watch Carrie; and drove to the hospital to see my tough guy. The hospital was about 35 miles away, and I'd never been there; I hopped in my car, consulted a map, also way before pc's or laptops; and it was dark by then, and finally got there.

When I got home I threw the dinner away, and haven't cooked corned beef and cabbage since, do you blame me.

  1. I don't think I would celebrate either. I guess Irish Eyes were smiling on Bob...we don't celebrate either...Michael even refuses to wear green to school...not even green underwear.

  2. Ugh...I don't blame you at all! It's hard not to with the kids, and I think it's fun to make them green oatmeal or pancakes in the morning. They think it's pretty funny.
