Very little good can come out of the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster. Perhaps photos like these are the an exception.

Bob and I have cruised a lot, and while we're not going to Italy to cruise anytime soon, we did book a cruise to Bermuda for this June. It sails out of NYC, I'll already be there, so Bob will fly in, in time to board the ship. We've gone to Bermuda twice before, and think it's wonderful. It'll be a good "first outing", for Bob after his illness. He assures me he'll be "cruise-ready" by June.

It's been a good week, so far.

Saturday we had dinner with my Cousin Carol and her family. Carol is a lot younger that me, probably the youngest cousin on my Mom's side of the family. We had a really good time. Her son Austin is in his second year of college and thinking he'd like to teach English Literature. He's an amateur golfer, but has put golf on the back burner, in favor of academics. He said it's weird not to be the smartest kid in the room, any more. I asked him if he'd read Cormac McCarthy, and he didn't know who he was. He's just starting out, he'll learn.
Sunday we had dinner with our friends Kaye and Gary. They were the first friends we made after we retired and moved to Murrieta. We enjoy going out to dinner and to the theater with them. The funny thing is we're so different. We actually don't have much in common, but we all really like each other and have a great time.
Monday, was ho-hum, Bob had PT in the AM and I took my walk. Loving those hour long walks. No sewing, I had to clean up because we're having our card group on Tuesday.
Tuesday, more cleaning. You know how it is with two dogs and a husband! I taught Tai Chi in the afternoon.
Tuesday night after cards, we had a surprise birthday party for my neighbor Reta. Her birthday is this week, and she'll be 92! She was really surprised when I brought out a platter of cupcakes with candles on them. She blew out the candles, and we all sang Happy Birthday to her.
Today, we drove to San Diego. Bob had an appt. with his "miracle doctor". She was very pleased with his progress. She keeps tweaking his life to make him better. Today she told him he can no longer sleep in in the mornings - up at 6 AM, 7 at the latest. (He had been sleeping in until 9 or 10.) A nap in the afternoon will be OK, but only for a max of 1 hour. (Not his usual 2-3 hour nap.) First thing in the morning, juicing, before breakfast.
Tonight we met-up with one of my favorite authors Brian Springer. His wife, Kim, bought something from me, so instead of mailing off, I got to see them and exchange hugs.

We bought a juicer, last month, and have started using it, but not regularly. Bob's sleeping habits have really interfered with it becoming a habit. Here's hoping the "new" tweaks will work. Bob really is improving. Every day is better, and he hasn't had any setbacks.

All this fun and I didn't take any photos, the ones I threw in, just make me smile. I hope you're smiling, too. They can be found here.

Fundraiser

That's Brett, my 15 year old grandson, in the middle of the photo. He's been selected to be part of a soccer team that will travel to Rio De Janeiro and San Paolo, Brazil, to play soccer against teams from all over South America. Brett's a good athlete and he loves soccer. When he was about 9 years old, he told me he was going to be the next Beckham! How's that for confidence!

In order to go to Brazil, he has to raise money, a lot of money, over $3,000. If you'd like to help, here's the link to his fundraising page: http://fca.clubambassadors.org/362. There's a chance to win a Caribbean vacation, too.

Women's Hearts.

In our family, the women really don't have heart disease, we're lucky. But I know things can change, in a heart-beat, and I've always supported the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women. I always have some of their little lapel pins to pass out, and wear one on my lanyard at work.

Now, one of the quilters has started Sew Red for Women.

There'll be a blog hop, starting next month. Since it's the end of the year, I've decided to do one of those boring re-caps that no one reads. This year has been very busy.

I made 20 quilts

I read 132 books; not the most I've read in one year, (150), or the least (110). You can click over to the book blog, if you want to see the list.
This is my 10th year teaching Tai Chi and QiGong.
We attended two weddings.
We celebrated 47 years of marriage with a cruise thru the Panama Canal.
I went to the BEA, in NYC, alone for the first time. It was heavenly, and I'm doing it again this year.
I'm on leave from Barnes and Noble.
Bob's health took a nose-dive, that's an understatement, this year. In late October, his body was shutting down. Now, at the end of the year, he has a new lease on life.
Bob's eating a lot of vegetarian meals, he is allowed some chicken, turkey and fish. This is the way I've been eating for years, so it's easy. Another huge change, Bob's taking several herbal supplements, that have had a positive effect on his body.
I've having to micro-manage Bob, for the first time in our marriage. It's a lot of damn work, I'll tell you. It's a tough job, but some one has to do it.

Things are looking brighter and we're looking forward to many more years together. Our 50th anniversary is in May, 2014, and we're already thinking of how to celebrate.

Tuesday night, we went to a wedding.

The groom, Devon, is the son of Sharon's BFF, Kimberly. He's home from Afghanistan, and stationed in Colorado. He'll be going back to Afghanistan, some time next year. Devon and Shauna decided to get married while he was here for Christmas. Shauna's parents did a great job with very short notice. It was a wonderful and very fun wedding. Kimberly's brother Troy was the minister; how cool to be married by your uncle!

My photos were pretty bad, but here's a couple of shots of the new couple. The first is right after they're pronounced Husband and Wife. Notice Devon's foot!

When Devon was in Afghanistan, I sent him books regularly, but I'd never met him until last Sunday at his Mom's house. He's a great guy, and now Bob and I are definitely part of Team Devon!

Because of our ages and our inclination to get what we want, when we want it, we seldom receive gifts. We're just hard to buy for. We never expect anything, but are always delighted when we're "gifted". This year we received a surprise gift from a blogger friend who I've never met IRL, Elissa of Punk Rock Parents fame. She said her daughter The Phi, was certain we'd like soup. She's right, we love soup. Isn't this a great gift?

From Sharon and Oden we received some great USC themed clothing and Bob got a Dodger Stadium Seat Cushion. You can tell where our loyalties are, sports-wise!

Our weather this week has been great, but previously, it's been freezing here, and these have been great for when I walk the dogs. Plus, I'm now walking over an hour three times a week while Bob's at Physical Therapy.

Speaking of Bob, he's really doing well. He has chronic pain, but his other problem, neuropathy of the stomach is under control, thanks to a major dietary change, some prescription drugs and lots of herbal supplements. He's working on strength and endurance at PT. He really is weak from being so ill, and his endurance is pretty low. He's making progress and hasn't had any set-backs, which I think is fabulous.

The other day, my youngest was telling me about a shenanigan her ex had just pulled. We were discussing ways to handle any repeats, and she said, "but Mom, you always taught us to be kind and caring." This video reminds me of those lessons. It's a bit long, but very touching.

This year and last year, Sharon and Oden volunteered to put up our outside Christmas decorations. They did a terrific job. They not only did they do the outside, they brought the inside decorations down from the attic, so I could do a bit of decorating, too.

I love these snow people. Especially since we've only had snow once in the 13 years we've lived Murrieta.

The Bob Report

I haven't done a "Bob Report" for almost a month. Bob is doing well. He's still on his Long Road To Recovery; the great news is he hasn't had any set-backs!

Our days are filled with appointments, this week a total of 6. Last week he started Physical Therapy, hoping to regain some or all of his strength. Being ill, really takes a lot out of you. He still has back pain; we're hoping the PT will help that, too.

We've always been pro-active with Bob's health and that continues. This week we saw our Endocrinologist. Bob sees him semi-annually and he was amazed at the improvement in Bob's blood work. Really amazed. He even reduced the amount of insulin Bob's taking.

We also saw our Family Doctor and her comment was, "You've bought yourself 10 more years!" That almost made me cry, but I held myself together.

As bad as Bob was at following a good diabetic plan, I didn't think he'd live to be 70, and now he's 71. When he reached 70, I told him, "let's shoot for 80". He wasn't really enthusiastic about that, but now he is. He's thinking about what cruise we'll go on for our 50th anniversary in May of 2014, and planning on actually sticking around until he's 80+.

We're continuing with a semi-vegetarian diet. The GI doctor would prefer vegan, but Bob's having some chicken, turkey or fish a couple of times a week; also a 1/2 cup of milk 2-3 times a week. After all Bob's a meat and potatoes guy, born in Indiana, all this "California Healthy stuff" is a big change. The GI doctor also has him on an herbal supplement program that is really helping, a lot. I'm so glad our regular doctor sent us to San Diego to see her.

I'm really happy.

Blogiversary Number Four

I've been blogging for Four Years! I just a plain blogger, not fancy, except for my blog design, it's fancy. I started blogging after Carrie moved to the other coast, the Right Coast. She started a blog, and I thought it was a really great way to stay in touch. It was that, and so much more.

I've "met" some wonderful people blogging, even met some of them IRL. I have blog friends all over the country and a couple in other countries. I've even been sad when one of them stops blogging, it's like loosing contact with a cousin.

I have many interest; so I have many blogs; a quick glance at the "nav bar" at the top, proves my point.

I just checked my dashboard and here are the current stats:

"I took my piano to the mountains of Kanchanaburi to play for some very old, injured and handicapped elephants, especially a blind elephant Plara immediately behind the piano.
Plara, the elephant just behind the piano, worked all his life in the logging trade until he was rescued and donated to Elephant's World. Plara was blinded by sharp branches when he carried logs in the deep jungle. He is 41 years old and has a gentle temperament with humans despite all he has been through. Because he is blind, each time I visit him I play a few notes on the flute to say hello."

These were taken using the self timer on my pocket sized Cannon. You know, press the button and dash to get in the shot. I really like the top one, but Oden didn't like that his chin looked like a double chin. He's slimmed down considerably, growing to me quite the young man. He grew 1 entire inch in the past month!
He like following photo much better.

I've taken down the Autumn decor, but I thought I'd include a couple of photos.

I pulled some of my Autumn things from garage storage and under the bed, to decorated a little for Fall. I"ve had the little man and woman for probably 30 years. At the old house they were in the kitchen year round. The fat quarter wrapped toilet-paper pumpkins, in front of the small scarecrow, adorned the front of the fireplace.

The Bob Report.

He has a very long road to recovery, but each day he's getting a little bit better. I'm very thankful for that. This is how this week went. Four days equaled five specialist appointments, one in San Diego and nothing scheduled today, YEA.

On Monday I asked Bob if it'd be easier to have a hand-held shower head. He said it sure would. He'd been having trouble with the shower, he could either stand to shampoo, or sit to clean his body, not both, not enough energy. I called our plumber Phil, and asked him to purchase and install a new hand-held shower head. (We really trust Phil.) On Wednesday, Phil came and installed the new shower head.

On Tuesday, after Tai Chi, I picked Bob up to go out for a quick bite. He's eating vegetarian, now, and he had his first Garden Burger and he liked it! We played cards that night and dominoes last night, with our regular groups. Everyone was happy to see Bob.

The Jan Report

I've been doing a bit of crafty sewing, making some gifts. I'm chomping at the bit to start a new quilt, but haven't found the time. I'm also no longer unemployed. B&N "suggested" I go on leave, instead of resigning, so I'm on leave, until I can go back to work. (I still get my employee discount, too!)

I've been really busy, helping Bob. He really is a lot of work. I'm his chauffeur, chief cook/bottle washer, laundress, etc., but my main job is keeping everything organized. His new meds and the times to take them required me to make an excel spread sheet, just so we could both understand what to take, and when!

You may be wondering why I included laundress. I haven't washed Bob's clothes in about 40 years. He has much more laundry than I do, and he always has. Bob was an athlete, and worked out, (soaked his workout gear with sweat), at least once a day, seven days a week. He would change clothes 2 or 3 times a day. A long time ago, I informed him that his dirty clothes were his responsibility. He could wash them whenever he desired clean clothing, and if he wanted to wash the whites with the dark clothing, he could wear pink T's, if he wanted. Now, he doesn't have the energy to workout, of course, or do his laundry; so I'm happy to do it. He has two bins for his dirty clothes, I've insisted that he use one for whites and one for darks, to help me out, for some reason he had never thought of that!

I don't adhere to the above schedule, I'm fast and organized. This is more Bob's MO! LOL.

Tai Chi class rumble

Yesterday was my last Tai Chi Class for the year. We always take a Winter Hiatus, because attendance is very low during the holiday period. Most years, not always, the class gives me a holiday gift, usually cash, and I sock away, as my "travel fund". (Hello, NYC!) This year it was a nice pile of cash, $354.00. {Before I started teaching this class, 10 years ago, I was the "collector" for the former teacher. I'd ask each class member to contribute at least $1.00 for each month they took the class}. This year I have 25 active students, and I received a group card signed by everyone who contributed. One student gave me a check for $25.00, one an envelope with $50.00, and one an envelope with $5.00! The $5.00 student has never contributed to the "holiday pot", before. I must be getting more valuable, after 4 years of teaching her! Also I have 5 new or semi-regular students who didn't contribute at all.

I volunteer to teach this class for free, that's what volunteer means. I teach Yang 108 Movement Long Form Tai Chi and 3 forms of Qi Gong, 2 days a week, 45 weeks of the year. It's great to be appreciated; but I always scratch my head at the people who show up, take advantage and have no appreciation. I'm not being mean about this, my class members live where I do, a gated senior community of stand alone houses, situated around a golf course. These are very middle class retired people, not people living from paycheck to paycheck. The non-contributors and the $5.00 person, still leave me scratching my head.

BTW, I do treat everyone well, and equal, just the way I want to be treated myself. (all images found here.)

Go Team Prytz!

Bob was in the hospital, again, this week. Our GP isn't shy about sending her patients to a specialist. That's one of the things we like about her. On Wednesday, Bob was so weak and dehydrated from nausea, the doc sent him to a GI specialist in San Diego, about an hour away, if you drive fast, which I do.

The specialist, Dr. P., after talking to Bob and examining him, hospitalized him. The poor guy was really sick.

When he went in the local hospital on October 6, he weighed 240 pounds. He was much too heavy, but unwilling to do anything about it. His solution was to purchase larger clothing! Good for the economy, not so good for his body. When he left the San Diego hospital, yesterday, he weighed 198 pounds! It's a horrid way to loose weight. Now that he's home he has to change his eating habits, in order to be healthy, and he's agreed to be vegetarian. I've already ordered some cook books from BN.com.

He didn't agree willingly, but his daughters and I have ganged up on him. To go back to his old habits would be suicide, literally, and we want him around for many more years. Carrie even created a new board on Pinterest - food for my Dad! The locals, Sharon and I, will be cheering him on, during this new adventure.

I'm very frustrated, if I receive a wonderful comment and want to say Thank You, I can't Or, a blog friend has asked a question, and I have no way to reply, via email. No Reply Bloggers are of my pet-peeves and below is how you can fix is if you want.

Most bloggers love to reply to their comments, so if you've received a reply to a comment you've left on a blog, you're probably a NRB! This means your Blogger settings are set to hide your email address. Seems like a safe idea at first, but in reality it means you can't interact with any of the lovely blogs you follow, and worst of all, you can't win anything!!! Tragic!

When you leave a comment on a blog, the blogger receives an email with your comment, and will usually hit "reply" to send you a sweet note back (hopefully one saying you won something rad!), BUT, if you're a NRB, the reply email address displays as "noreplyblogger@blogger.com" - ah! SO frustrating for bloggers!

1. Log into your Blogger account, and click on the drop down tab next to your email address on the top right corner.
2. Click "Blogger Profile"
3. The second line down should say "Show My Email Address"- if this box is not checked, you're a NRB!
4. Check it! If the email address shown (the one you used to open your Blogger account) is no longer working, you can type in an updated email address. OR, if you feel creepy about all of Bloggingdom seeing your real, personal email address, go create a new address just for blog land and enter it here, making sure the "show email address" box is checked.

Life as we know it!

There's a Root Beer Store in Old Town Temecula. They have a gazillion kinds of Root Beer, and at our house we really like Root Beer. Are you getting bored with Root Beer, yet?

When I was a kid, my great Dad even brewed Root Beer, in the garage. It wasn't outstanding, but it was fun for homemade. You may be wondering why is is sixpack of Root Beer on my dining room table? Well, tomorrow is Oden's 12th birthday, and he LOVES Root Beer. He was ready to move to Murrieta after he found out about the Root Beer Store! That and Richie's Diner! The root beer is part of Oden's B'day gift.

Last month Oden won a gold medal in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournament, in Orange County.

And, we have some teen books written in French on the dining room table, too. Oden is taking French 1, at his local high school. He walks about a mile to the HS, for first period French, then a bus takes him to Middle School. Pretty amazing. Another neat thing about his schooling this year, is he has an extra period, because of the varied start times of HS and MS, and he's a teacher's aid to one of the coaches. He actually has 2 gym periods, each school day! The French books are another part of Oden's B'day gifts.

Since Bob's health has nose-dived, Sharon and Oden have been driving the 130 mile round trip, regularly to spend the day with us. The visits and regular phone calls from Carrie, in North Carolina, really help Bob's morale. Sharon and Oden are coming today, and Oden can take his gifts home.

I posted in September about how excited I was to be getting two new quilt racks. They've both arrived. The great quilt ladder above was made by a great guy in Kansas. On display, are my two most recent quilt finishes. I love them and won't be listing them in the shop. The other quilt rack is waiting completion, right here at my house. As soon as we have Bob, up and running, he'll finish it.

Bob had another procedure at the Pain Management doctor about a week and a half ago. It didn't work. Now, he's scheduled for a different procedure on Tuesday. We know that if this one works, he'll need at least one more, different, procedure in the near future.

He's also still very nauseated, we see the GP, next week, to see about a test for a diagnoses, so perhaps we can get him eating again. Bob's a great guy, but he became really overweight, before all this started. His solution to each weight gain was to purchase larger clothes. No good. With the nausea he's experiencing he's lost 32 pound. He's has much more to go, believe me; but this rapid weight loss, about a pound a day, isn't good for anyone. He's not only losing fat, I bet he's losing muscle. He has a lot of both, but I'd like to stop the muscle loss.

Lizzie, is the small black object in the lower part of the quilt rack photo. She's 15 years old, a Cairn Terrier we rescued 9 years ago. She's having her 2nd bout with cancer, this year. The first tumor was near her tail, it's was the size of a golf ball. We had it removed and up popped the 2nd tumor. It's at the very top of her chest, and a little bigger than a quarter. The vet can't remove it because he'd be required to remove an additional inch, all the way around, and Lizzie's little chest is just too small. We've been treating her with antibiotics and steroids, and the tumor has stopped bleeding and seems to be shrinking. She has another 2 1/2 weeks of steroids, so I hope that will help. I have made a pretty drastic change, resigning from B&N, but the other change was small. I use google reader to keep track of the blogs I read, if you don't use a reader, you should. Using google reader will save you from clicking back and forth between your favorite blogs to see who has posted.

My reader was out of control; I'd either followed or subscribed to a ton of blogs; some mornings there'd be over 300 new posts. In order to get things under control I started un-following or unsubscribing to a lot of blogs. I think I deleted all the blogs that just show a teaser in the reader, you had to click over to read the full post and/or see the photos. I find that irritating, even though I know why the blogger does this, I don't like it, so they're gone.

I'm hoping to have no more shocking 300 post, first thing in the AM.

There was a Barbie ban at our house

#Barbie's proportions brought to life: 5'9" 110lbs 39" bust, 18" waist, 33"hips.

I really believed, and still do, that dolls for little girls and boys should be wonderful to hold, soft and easy to cuddle; not like Barbie and Ken more like Annie and Andy.

I thought that children interacting with dolls helped them in the long run to be loving and caring adults and parents. Even though my daughters didn't like my decision, I think my philosophy proved me right; my daughters are loving caring adults and parents.

Opening a new chapter in my life.

Yesterday, I became officially retired, I gave my notice at B&N and for the first time since I stopped working full time, managing retail stores, 16 years ago, I have no job commitment. It really feels strange to not have a schedule to worry about. For me working at B&N was all about getting out, and doing something that I loved, and being with great people. I loved the bookstore, the books, the booksellers and cafe' sellers most of all. We even had some great customers, along with the not so great ones.

I'm still teaching Tai Chi twice a week, so I DO have some place to be at 3:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

I have such a great life, but it's just changed dramatically. Bob's still doing about the same, MEDIUM, so this way I'll be around to help and care for him. Maybe I'll have time to do more quilting and photo taking. I've been doing some crafty sewing, but quilting and photography have definitely taken a back seat.

Still Medium

Bob is pretty much the same. High pain level, nauseated, loosing weight. The only thing that I'm happy about is the loosing weight.

He's seen all the important doctors, since leaving the hospital. The GP, the Cardiologist, and the Hematologist, and most importantly, right now, the Pain Management doctor.

Tomorrow Bob's going to have a procedure at the Pain Management center, that should take care of the back, leg and knee pain. Keep your fingers crossed.

I'm getting along fine. Despite Bob's pain, he's made a concentrated effort to be pleasant. His effort has made my "care taker" role so much easier.

When I have time, I've been blog reading and pinning. Love Pinterest! What a lifesaver it's been; I call it creative time-wasting, just what I need right now.

Bob came home from the hospital on Saturday. We're both really happy to have him back where he belongs. He had an excellent experience while in the hospital. The staff was skilled, efficient and caring. All the women were beautiful and the men were handsome, no lie. {Bob was in the same hospital in 2007, when he had a TIA, the staff may have been skilled, but they were far from caring or efficient. It was so bad, Bob checked himself out! True story.} Obviously there has been a positive revamp in the nursing personnel department.

I have some wonderful friends, both IRL and in Blog-land. Bob received some wonderful get well cards, and I'm really grateful for the love and humor that has brightened his day. If you happen to have our address, some time, a card & an extra stamp, please send more!

He's had phone calls from Carrie in NC, which have really brightened his day. Sharon and Oden spent the day here on Sunday, I even made Chicken and Dumplings; Oden's favorite. I have truly wonderful daughters.

When asked how Bob is doing, I'm replying, "He's about Medium." This is how I interpret medium:

Bob's pain is under control, for the most part. Yesterday, I even "caught" him walking without his cane.

Bob and I are temporarily traveling as a pod, you know like old people who are always together? So, "we" had an appt. with our GP on Tuesday, and she was able to give him an injection that is helping, temporarily with the back pain. Bob has absolutely no appetite, not normal, and is nauseous much of the time, so she also addressed that. She held off doing more tests, right now, because "he has enough going on."

In addition to the pain Bob has heart problems and diabetes; nothing is ever simple at the Prytz household! Tomorrow, "we" see the cardiologist. While in the hospital, Bob had a couple of "cardiac episodes"; so that has to be investigated. On Monday "we" see the pain management specialist; he visited Bob three times in the hospital, and thinks he's found how to solve this problem. Keep your fingers crossed, and keep sending prayers and good thoughts Bob's way.

In my spare time, I finished a quilt top and back. I hope to get some photos taken today and a post on Janice Elaine Sews. Check over there; if you're interested, in a couple of hours.

Music

I have a long list of things I love. Bob, my kids, my grandkids, dogs, books, reading, creating, and music are probably right up at the top of this list. Right now, I'm listening to Social Distortion, Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes, but I'm not subjecting anyone else, except Bob, to the rock and roll I love.

Carrie just posted Day 15 of her 31 Days of Blog Design Tips & Tricks series, and had this to say, and I couldn't agree more.

Music - wonderful or evil?

My personal vote is that having music on your blog is evil. Because seriously, how on Earth are you suppose to enjoy reading and perusing someone’s content on the down low when out of the blue (because you know it takes a bit for the evil music to queue up) you’re assaulted with the writer’s favorite tunes?

Do you have music that plays on your blog, do you realize it's probably clashing with my music or mood, or jarring me enough to close the browser, and not continue reading?

An alternative would be to embed a favorite music video in your post and say something about it. Then your readers can choose to listen to it or not.

Day 10, Bob is finally home.

Here's Bob, in his temporary home, away from home. Unfortunately, there's still no resolution regarding solving his pain problem. On the bright side, he has a great view from his window.

When I'm at home, I have my boon companions Dudley, almost 13, and Lizzie, 15, to keep me company. Boy, oh boy, do these two keep my grounded. They're always asking, when's dinner? - is it time for a walk? - what about a treat?, surely, we need a treat!

I haven't been doing any quilting, but I did made these two toy giraffes. I love their big ears.

I've been visiting Bob two hours in the morning and at least two hours in the afternoon/evening. We're both baseball fans, so we've been watching the play-offs, when they're on. Now, Bob's being given drugs to help with the pain, but I was taken aback, last night when he asked me if I'd seen any good movies, lately. You know, like in my spare time when I'm not with him. This guy cracks me up, I assured him that I hadn't seen any movies without him.

Yesterday, I taught my Tai Chi class. I thought it was important to do "normal" things. My new quilt rack arrived from Kansas, but it's still in the box. I'll unpack it some time, today. The box is much larger than I anticipated...scary.

Bluer than Blue

I'm rarely "blue", but this morning I'm feeling down a bit. Bob's still in the hospital and so far nothing has eased his pain. It's difficult to see him in so much pain. His upbeat attitude helps a lot. Another good thing is he's getting excellent care. The hospital staff is efficient and caring. Some times, they just stop in to chat, no vitals, no meds, just checking in on him.. I've been visiting every morning and afternoon, for a couple of hours each visit. I'm off to my morning visit. Keep Bob in your thoughts and prayers.

Leaping over tall buildings in a single bound...

May be fun,
but down the road, you may suffer the consequences.

I tell people that Bob's bad back was caused by years of athleticism, plus almost 30 years on LAPD, and leaping over tall buildings in a single bound, that's what heroes do. All those training runs for triathlons; all that running after bad guys, leaping over fences and fist fights were fun, in a guy kind of way, and Bob doesn't regret a moment, but now in our golden years, all that activity has caught up with him.

If you're on FB with me, you know he's been in added pain recently. Early this morning he woke me up, and asked me to take him to the ER. The pain was more than he could stand. Bob's tough, but this pain is tougher. At the ER, they were great, but nothing helped. They've decided to admit him, to get some further help; the ER doc said that amount of pain made Bob a Fall Risk, and they needed to keep him and find something that would work.

I'm home briefly, to take care of some of the life/business things that were necessary. I needed to call our daughters to keep them in the loop. I always feel guilty about possibly upsetting them, but Bob's important to them, too, and I think them should always know what's going on with him. Called work, to tell them to take me off the schedule for a week or two. Bob had two Dr appts, tomorrow, had to cancel them. Had to cancel my Tai Chi class today at 3:30, and the dominoes group was meeting at out house tonight.

Life is good, and Bob will get better.

Jennifer's wedding day was fast approaching.
Nothing could dampen her excitement - not even her parent's nasty divorce.

Her mother had found the PERFECT dress to wear, and would be the best-dressed mother-of-the-bride ever!
A week later, Jennifer was horrified to learn that her father's new, young wife had bought the exact same dress as her mother!
Jennifer asked her father's new young wife to exchange it, but she refused.
"Absolutely not! I look like a million bucks in this dress, and I'm wearing it," she replied.

Jennifer told her mother who graciously said, ''Never mind sweetheart. I'll get another dress.
After all, it's your special day.''
A few days later, they went shopping, and did find another gorgeous dress for her mother.
When they stopped for lunch, Jennifer asked her mother, ''Aren't you going to return the other dress?
You really don't have another occasion where you could wear it."

Her mother just smiled and replied, ''Of course I do, dear.....I'm wearing it to the rehearsal dinner the night BEFORE the wedding.''

Update

This morning bright and early, I headed off to the Temecula Outdoor Quilt Show. The quilt show was great, but it was hot and humid, so I didn't stay as long as usual.

While I was taking photos of this beautiful cactus, a woman stopped and asked me what kind of cactus it was. If I'm photographing a cactus, I must know what type it is! There were also some insects on the cactus and she demanded to know what they were, too! Jeez.

Here are a couple of my favorites. Aren't they great? If you're interested in more quilt photos, I've posted some here.

Our plans for tomorrow have changed. We were going to the MCAS Mira Mar Air Show, always a great time; but Bob's back has thrown him for a loop, and he can barely walk. Sharon and I discussed, briefly, going without him, but decided he's the reason we go. We'll go next year, hopefully.
Bob is scheduled for treatment at the pain management center on Monday afternoon. It can't come fast enough!

a catch up

This is Lizzie, she had a spot of surgery, yesterday. The vet removed a growth, near her rectum, the size of a golf ball! He'd been watching it for awhile, and since it was growing, and she's so healthy for 15, we decided to get rid of it. Lizzy's doing great; she's just not too happy with the collar thing.

On Monday, she'll have the drain in her wound, I'm not showing you that, removed and in 2 weeks the stitches come out.

Remember the baby quilt I was concerned about; I'd sent if off, and never heard a thing? I resorted to contacting my SIL, the new mom's MIL. The quilt was received and loved, just not acknowledged! I asked my SIL not to get on the mom re a thank you note. I think thank you notes should come from the heart or because you want to sent one, not because your MIL tells you to. BTW, this mom is well educated, and wasn't raised by wolves, I've met her parents.

It just goes to show, you never know about people.

I've been using google chrome for about 3 years. I use it 97% of the time. I love google chrome. Love.
This morning it crashed. It wouldn't work. Zero.

I un-installed it; and attempted to re-install, with no sucess. I'm stuck using Internet Explorer, and I'm not happy. Yuck.

A Pet’s 10 Commandments

Long Story

Part One

About the same time I retired, 15 years ago, Avon announced their first 3-day Walk for Breast Cancer. (Now, they just do 2 days.) The walk took you from Santa Barbara to Santa Monica, 75 miles; and you had to donate, via pledges, $1500, in order to be eligible to walk. I signed up! I raised all the money and started training.

I am the only non-athlete in our family. I have always lived with dancers, runners, swimmers and cyclist. I figured with as much as I knew about training I could certainly walk 75 miles in 3 days. Bob was so supportive, he signed on to volunteer, wherever they needed him, and he was my training cheerleader.

I started slow, walking around our block, that was only 1/2 mile, but hey, it was a start. Then it was twice around the block, then I expanded to around the neighborhood. Soon, I was up to 3 miles, no problem. Then 4, then 5. I complained to Bob that I thought I was going too slow, because all these other people were whizzing by me. Bob the cheerleader told me that they were probably just going a short distance, fast; while I was going a long distance, and needed to pace myself.

We still lived in Long Beach when all this was going on, and it was really easy to train, whenever I wanted. I could walk in the "heat", never 100 degrees, the rain, never freezing. I could stop and buy water whenever I needed to, and usually find a bathroom, when necessary.

After several months, I was up to 8 mile walks, and I was loving it. I felt so good. Walking is a great way to see what's going on around your. It's a great way to meditate. It's good for your bones and for your waistline, too. At the time I was still having daily migraines, I almost never had a migraine during all the training! Walking ='d Love.

Then, my body rebelled against my walking. It started with red patches just above my ankles. I ignored them, didn't have any I idea what it could be. I kept walking. Soon the red patches moved up my legs, eventually all the way to my knees. I still didn't know what it could be, so I went to the Dr. She was a little puzzled, until she asked what my routine activities were. When I told her I was walking long distances, she knew.

My body was sending out histamines; I was kinda allergic to walking, at least long distance walking. She explained that it was like a repetitive motion injury, my body happens to be too fragile for long distance walking. She gave me steroids to get rid of the hives, and told me that if I continued walking long distance my body might really rebel and I might have a heart attack! This was such a blow, I was devastated. It scared me, too. I stopped walking. I could walk 3 miles, that's my limit. Bob and I traded places, he walked the Avon 3-day Walk, and I volunteered.

Part 2

You may be thinking, why is she posting about this, it happened a long time ago. I'm sharing, because I still can't walk over 3 miles without breaking out in hives, sometimes up to my knees. It still happens almost every time I go to NYC, it's such a walking town.

It also happens when I work at Barnes and Noble, especially during the holidays, when there are more customers to help. Yes, I can walk over 3 miles inside of Barnes and Noble. Who needs a pedometer when you have angry histamines!

The last two times I've worked, I've gotten hives, the last time they were up to my knees. This is the first time, in over ten years, it's happened to me when I worked a non-holiday shift. I'm thinking I might have to stop working. I really don't want to, but it's definitely a possibility. I love working at Barnes and Noble. I've always thought I'd work there until I'm at least 70. Life can be such a pisser!

A catch up

The new's yesterday was good. The pathologist took two samples from the thyroid nodule, and could only see healthy cells. The needle she used were fine, like acupuncture needles; it did hurt but not enough to complain about. We wished each other well, and we hope to never see each other again.

On the Quilty Growl post I did, I don't have the recipients' phone number, so I FB'd her again, wishing her happy birthday and asking if the quilt and book arrived. No response. My final attempt has been to email Bob's sister, the recipient's MIL, for info. After that, I give up.

Now, I'm off to work. Tomorrow we're going to the Dodger game in San Diego with Sharon and Oden. Petco Park is a great ballpark.

Next Saturday is the Temecula Outdoor Quilt Show. I'm very excited about going and snapping some photos. Then on Sunday, we're going to the Mira Mar Airshow. Good times.

In 1969, when I was 25, during a routine exam, my doctor discovered a lump on my thyroid. He sent me for x-rays and it was decided that the nodule had to come out! I was hospitalized for a couple of days after the surgery. The good news was the thyroid tumor was benign. The bad news was the surgery was brutal. I was bruised from earlobe to earlobe and nipple to nipple. Really! My throat was so sore I couldn't swallow and could barely talk. To top it off, (I was in St. Mary's Hospital in Long Beach), the nuns came in an told me I was faking and to start eating! My dear roommate, who was Catholic, was horrified; and assured me that not all Catholics were like those nuns. I knew that.

When my Dad visited me, I told him how bad I was hurting and how the nuns berated me. He went to the office of the hospital director and told her to keep the nuns out of my room. They didn't return for the remainder of my stay.

Fast forward to 1988, when I was 44, another nodule was discovered on my thyroid. When the doctor told me I literally burst out in tears, and I'm not a weepy woman. He asked what was wrong, so I told him what happened 19 years earlier. He assured me that medicine has come a long way, and this would be a breeze. And it was. After an ultrasound, it was determined the nodule needed to come out; they used the same scar, that was good, and the results were the same, benign. I only stayed in the hospital one day. I had visitors from work and I could actually talk to them. Amazing.

So, here we are in 20ll, and I'm 67, with another nodule on my thyroid. My endocrinologist has been watching this one for couple of years but thinks it's time to take a look at it. This time I don't have to have surgery for him to determine if it's benign or not. He's sending me to a pathologist, today, who will do a fine needle aspiration. She'll then examine the tissue and determine the next step.

We live in a great age. Medicine has come a long way, again. Keep your fingers crossed for me, that everything will be AOK!

Do you see a trend, here? I've had a nodule every 20 years or so. I wish it would stop. I threw in the photos because every post needs photos.

In the past 6 months I've given 4 quilts away to families with new babies. All hand-made by me. I make quilts when inspiration strikes, I choose the fabric, pick or design the pattern, assemble everything; each piece is unique and made with my love and sometimes blood. Quilts take a long time to make; I usually have an idea, carry it to fruition, then quilt waits until I have someone to gift it to. In other words, these baby quilts are not usually made with a particular baby in mind.

Three of those quilts were received in person and I got a warm thank you and a hug. Hugs are great thank yous. The fourth quilt was mailed off, with a note and a book, to a relative in NoCal. I FB'd that the package was on the way. I've never heard a thing, and I'm really disappointed.

Today I was blog-reading, I know, gasp!, and came across this, at I'm a ginger monkey:

Sometimes I make quilts for new babies and don't get much of a response from the parents. That really irks me. I could go to the Gap and buy a few onesies. I could buy you a rattly bear. I could spend literally a few bucks and have a gift boxed stack of stuff for you. But instead I make you a quilt, because it shows I care about you and want to welcome your child into the world with a hug. If I'd given you a cheque for $600, would you appreciate it more? Yeh, probably. But then I wouldn't be as true to myself.

Now my gift quilts were lap-sized and not worth $600, more in the $180 - $250, range, but I also thought my quilts were better than a onesie or a bear. That's what I get for thinking, I guess. The photos are the four quilts I gave away, don't you think they all deserve a thank you?

I have a wonderful quilt rack in my bedroom, that I've had for probably 25 years. It holds some wonderful quilts that I've collected over the years. It's a ladder that leans against the wall, and it's tall. Now that I'm quilting, I've been wanting another for the living room. I saw just what I wanted on Jacquie's blog, and in one of her post, she mentioned that her Dad made the quilt ladder, and "If you're in the area I'm sure he'd love to make one for you....for a price." Well, her "area" is Kansas City, KS, (she's recently relocated to Chicago.), but I thought, what the heck, there's such a thing as a road trip, or UPS might work. So, I contacted her, and she put me in touch with her Dad, Fred. The upshot is, if there're no hang-ups, I should have a new quilt ladder by the end of October!

Right after I decided on getting a quilt ladder from Fred, I saw this Sabbathday Lake Towel Rack in the Shaker Workshops catalog. It's made from clear hard maple and measures 33" high x 34" wide x 6 1/2" deep. I thought it would be perfect for in front of our fireplace. I consulted with my resident furniture finisher, Bob, and asked if he'd finish it for me; if you order the kit, unfinished you save 50%. Bob said, sure, he'd do it.

So now, I'm going to have 2 new displays for quilts. Amazing!

I didn't post about my 9/11 memory yesterday; I thought I'd do it today.

Ten years ago, it happened. It was an American nightmare, we were attacked at home, on the main land, a first since the Revolutionary war. We all remember where we were, and what we were doing when we either experience the attack, or heard about it.

I've always lived on the West Coast, so I was just waking, when the first plane struck the Towers. The phone brought me all the way awake, it was our daughter Sharon, she'd heard and said, "Mom, I think we're at war." Man, what a shocker that was. After I got off the phone with her, I called my Mom, then my Dad and his wife. I wanted to make sure they were OK; of course they were, but I had to check. By that time it was late enough to call the bookstore, and make sure they knew what was going on; they'd need to deal with concerned customers.

There have been a lot of books dealing with the 9/11 experience, most weren't really worth much; even great authors weren't able to put it all together on the page. There is one that came out in '08 I want to recommend, Bikeman. Another good one is The Good Life.

Autumn Decor

We really never have Autumn, here in SoCal, not like the rest of the country. It's offically Autumn, now, but it's 100 degrees outside. Never the less, I like to decorated for Fall. This weekend I pulled some of my Autumn things from storage, to place in the living room. I"ve had the little man and woman for probably 30 years. At the old house they were in the kitchen year round.

These fabric pumpkins are TP, wrapped in batting, then wrapped in a FQ, fat quarter. Instead of a cinnamon stick for the stem, I rolled another FQ and stuffed it in the center.

I have some great blog friends. I've met a few IRL, there are a couple that I have their phone numbers. My address list has many entries for bloggers, we've exchanged cards, prizes and gifts. One of my long time blog friends is Lisa, when she read my post about Carrie re-doing my blog, she put her thinking cap on and came up with some F words for my book tab. Flies - Humor

I re-discovered this short list of things you should know about flies; I don't remember where I first saw it, but the doc. was saved to my computer in July of '08. If you recognize the source, let me know and I'll give proper credit.

1. Flies rarely carry handbags. This has nothing to do with their weight or the fact they could get in the way of their wings, but everything to do with the fact that flies get paid in shamrocks which they clip to their toes with hair slides, therefore rendering any handbag/purse type object useless, and a waste of shamrocks.

2. Flies can only eat one piece of sweetcorn a year, or else they implode.

3. Flies are a little bit scared of the actor Robert Downey Junior. It is something to do with his eyebrows.

4. Flies do not believe in goats. If they see a goat they pretend they haven’t as other flies will think they are mad and avoid them.

5. Flies can only count to seven and have to say the word ‘periscope’ after each number.

6. Flies also have an unexplained passion for anything by Tom Jones but can’t stand Val Doonican

7.Flies also cannot play hopscotch. It’s against their religion.

8. Flies are also horrible spellers, needing to google almost everything they have to spell. this doesn’t really work, as google has no idea what ‘ffudsiaop’ is, so it says ‘did you mean ‘ffudsiag’?’ which, of course, they never do.

Where Did You....

spend your honeymoon? Anything exciting happen while there? This question was posed, tonight by Thearica of Pigtales and Quilt fame. Go here to read her post.

We were young when we got married, 19 and 23. I spent 6 months planning the wedding and making my wedding gown; I didn't give a thought to a honeymoon. Bob and I had each started new jobs during that time, and we knew there wouldn't be a typical week of honeymoon; that was logical and we really didn't talk about it.

Here we are, after our church reception. The best man, Ron, drove us to my parents' house, in his Rambler, to change out of our wedding attire, into "going away" clothing. We'd hidden Bob's car in the garage, so no own would vandalize it, but my Uncle Glen managed to tie a string of empty cans to the rear bumper.

We left my parents house, in Long Beach, got to Pacific Coast Highway, and Bob said, "Which way, left or right?" I was stunned that he'd made no plans for our wedding night. Since I knew what was down the road, if we turned left, (the rest of Long Beach); I said right. Bob turned right, and we drove and drove. After driving over an hour and traveling about 60 miles on surface streets, we were in Malibu. Bob turned right, again, at Sunset Blvd, found a motel, and we shared our first night together.

Ask what?

I'm frequently asked why I have so many blogs. I have this one, my family blog. I have Murrieta365, my photo blog. Loves Books and Tea is my oldest blog. For my recipe's there's Jan's Kitchen. Last but not least is my newest interest, quilting, at Janice Elaine Sews.

The answer is, I have so many because I blog a lot. Today is the 13th of the month and this is my 24th post this month. Last month, for the entire month of July, I blogged 53 times. That's a lot of post. Having several blogs keeps one blog from becoming unfocused. If you're interested in my quilts, you know you can find that on Janice Elaine Sews. If you need a great book to read, you can check my recommendations on Loves Books and Tea. I love to take photos, and post the ones I love at Murrieta365; plus I have two photo memes on that blog. Everything else, family, music, humor, videos, work, fun, travel is on this blog.

One of my Tai Chi students asked how I had time to sleep. I thought that was pretty funny. He was just talking about my life, in general, he has no idea I blog, too.

Haircut

I started cutting hair when my husband became a police officer. I cut his hair and my daughters' hair, pretty much until they left home, (the daughters, not Bob); it sure helped the budget.

I started cutting Oden's hair last year. He was never happy with the haircuts he got at a barber shop or when Sharon would take him to a hairdresser. So, Sharon asked me to cut his hair. The live about 80 miles away, so it works out well, that Oden likes to wear his hair long. Above is a before photo taken on Monday at the San Diego Zoo.

I took about 4-5 inches off, and what a difference. He really didn't want his photo taken but, life's tough when you're just 11.

We're off to a minor league baseball game, tonight. Single A Baseball equals tons of fun.

Recently Amy at A Commonplace Life posted about her migraines. I had daily migraines for over 25 years, and this is the comment I left her:

"I had migraines for years. They were atypical and started when I was in my 30's. I had them most days, sometimes twice a day for over 25 years. I got no help from drs because my migraines weren't "normal". When I did finally get help the side effects of the meds where horrendous. Finally I couldn't work anymore, and retired at 51. When I was 57, I met a woman, a retired nurse, who referred me to a great neurologist. After trying a couple of different things and reviewing my history, he suggested botox. I would never consider botox to look younger, but I'd consider almost anything, including brain surgery, if I thought it'd stop my migraines.

Here's the thing, botox injections hurt during the procedure, not after. I can't imagine doing this for beauty! When you get botox for migraines, they use a lot; in your forehead area and at the base of your neck. It was so very worth it. It's been almost 10 years and I rarely have migraines. When I had them daily, I had no idea what my "triggers" were. Now, I know. I gave up chocolate and wine; to me it was a no-brainer. The only trigger I can't control is atmospheric changes. When I have a migraine, now, I take Frova. It has very few side effects."

I shared this hoping it might help someone else. Amy let me know that she's talked to her Dr. about this and thinks she might have to go this way. I wish her and every migraine sufferer out there, lots of luck.

The photos have nothing to do with migraines, of course. I took them on Monday, when Oden and I went to the San Diego Zoo.

Today was my friend Andrew's last day of work at Barnes and Noble. He's headed off to graduate school in Central California. I've known Andrew for over 10 years: he's a very special person. You can tell from the send off he received how special he is.

I just read a book, (I know, it's hard to believe). The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick, has been out for awhile, but I learned it's going to be made into a movie. The movie is going to star Mark Wahlberg, I think he's great; and it's about family, friendships, connections and football. How can this be bad. It can't. So, I read it, and loved it.

Pat Peoples, a married high school teacher, has spent four years in a neural health facility. He's finally rescued by his mother, and brought home against the wishes of his father. Pat thinks he's only been gone a couple of months. He still has issues, including an explosive temper, but works hard to overcome them. "As Pat doggedly practices being kind rather than right, grace enters his life in unexpected ways. In refusing to be defeated by pessimism, Pat learns about true silver linings, not pretty happy endings."*

This novel really touched me and I've been talking to Bob and Sharon about how important it is to be kind, rather than right. Sharon loved the idea of incorporating this into Oden's life, too.

Lumpy bed

No, we don't need a new mattress. We actually got a new mattress set last year and we're very happy with it. You may wonder why there're lumps in our bed. The truth is, we've added them.

Bob and I were both experiencing horrible leg cramps during the night. We tried upping our mineral intake, but that didn't seem to do the trick. The cramps were bad, like the kind you got when you were a kid, and some one wisely told you they were growing pains.

I remembered reading a newspaper article about adding a bar of soap to your bed, between the bottom fitted sheet and the mattress pad, to stop leg cramps. Since nothing else had worked, I told Bob we were going to give it a try.

Drum Roll, Please - It Worked

The bars of soap, I did two since we had plenty of soap and both of us were having the problem, have been below the sheets, for a month now, and I'm happy to report no leg cramps. I've decided not to remove them, as a test; because who wants more leg cramps, not us!

There's a "new to me" online photo editing site I found out about at Artsee Bloggers. (I'm an Artsee Blogger, via my quilting blog and photo blog.) It's called pixlr-o-matic.

Not being shy, I gave it a whirl.

I picked an old photo of my Mom and Dad to try. This was in 1966, two years after Bob and I were married and four years before they divorced. The photo isn't a great one, so I thought, what the heck, let's see what happens. Here's the original, that I scanned to my computer a few years ago.

I asked a woman to not sit on the floor, today. I told her it was a safety issue, she was really spread out with her body and books, no one could get by. She said, "Who's safety are you concerned with?!"

Best customer contact, at work today - "I drink too much beer." I took him to the addiction section. He really did want to stop drinking.

Last night Bob and I went to a Dodgers Game. Sharon and Oden were already planning on going. Sharon had won great seats to the game, as part of a charity auction she participates in every year. Their seats were in the field level, right behind home plate.

Bob and I had nothing planned for Monday, so we decided to go, too. The Dodgers have a great deal, if you buy certain seats, you get a free MetroLink train ride, and bus ride, to the ballpark. We bought the deal, but ended up driving; Riverside County is the only one that service stops before the game ends; we could get there but not get home until the morning! Next time we'll do that deal for a day game, it should be fun.

I ran into Sharon and Oden getting Dodger Dogs, and gave Sharon her birthday card. Yes, it was her birthday, yesterday. After they'd eaten, they came and visited with Bob and I at our seats. They were seated in section 1 and we were in section 43.

Momma's got a brand new bag

I'm a pretty casual gal and I really needed a new purse. Most of the bags in the stores that were "doable" had way too much hardware on them for my taste; I turned to etsy, and went the hand made route. Of course there're tons of etsy shops that sell hand made purses. This is the one I settled on:

It was made by a great gal in Ohio, creationsbyellyn, and it's reversible.

These are the items that go in my purse, every day, and they fit in my new bag, perfectly. I bought the small zip pouches a long time ago from JPATPURSES, also an etsy seller.

After I'd used my new bag for a week or so, I decided I probably wouldn't ever reverse it; I like having the pockets on the inside. But, I want another one, just like this, but black on the outside; I thought that'd be better for the "winter" months. I know we don't have much "winter" in SoCal, but I contacted creationsbyellyn, and ordered a 2nd bag with a print, this time paisley, on the inside and solid black on the outside. It's winging it's way to me, as I type. She's a wonderful etsy seller. Stop by and visit her and see what else she has to offer.

Now, here's something funny, when my new bag came, I realized it was the same fabric, only black instead of brown, of one of the tablecloths I'd made!

This was my plan for this week:

Sunday: Scheduled to work at B&N.
Monday: Finish HST Rainbow Quilt

Tuesday: Finish back for HST Rainbow Quilt, teach Tai Chi, in the evening play cards with friends.
Wednesday: Go do something fun, I'm thinking of the Zoo
Thursday: Get my teeth cleaned, teach Tai Chi, play dominoes in the evening.
Friday: Scheduled to work at B&N.
Saturday: Scheduled to work at B&N.

This is what's actually happened, so far:

Sunday, worked at B&N.
Monday, started sewing, got called into work at B&N, some one was ill and needed to go home. That some one stayed and filled me in on numerous things, while I'm encouraging her just to go and get some rest.
Tuesday, woke up with a horrid summer cold. At first I thought it was allergies, because I have allergies 365/24/7; but I soon decided it was a cold. Treated myself with OTC meds, Dayquil and Nightquil. Cancelled the Tai Chi class, stayed home from the card game. Bob went and had a great time.
Wednesday, feeling better, but I'm hanging out in a T and sweats, and I'm gonna finish my HST Rainbow Quilt; and maybe the back, too.

As I said, Best laid plans.
